Patient Transporter


 

Description

Under supervision, to safely transport patients and necessary equipment to and from medical procedures, nursing units, or other services using a variety of transportation resources, including wheelchairs, carts, and beds.

Current vacancies are located at Valley Medical Center and O'Connor Hospital for various shifts. However, the eligible list will be used for future vacancies, as they occur, as well as for Extra-Help (Temporary) assignments.


Please Note: Applicants who meet the employment standards will be invited to take the online examination tentatively scheduled for 6/23/2023 through 7/7/2023.

Typical Tasks

The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all duties listed.

  • Transports patients and/or patient-related items to their destinations;

  • Lifts and transfers patients to and from wheelchairs, gurneys, or beds;

  • Completes all transport requests in accordance with established protocol;

  • Verifies correct patient identification by comparing information from notification of request to patient wristband;

  • Alerts nursing staff immediately to any signs of patient distress or equipment malfunction;

  • Consults with nursing personnel before lifting and transferring patients and obtains assistance when necessary;

  • Utilizes wheelchairs, gurneys, and other approved rolling stock to carry out the transport of patients;

  • Notifies the Patient Transport Coordinator when assignments are initiated, completed, delayed, or cancelled, or of any needs and/or concerns;

  • Collects and returns wheelchairs and gurneys to the proper holding areas;

  • Responds to emergency activities, such as code calls, disasters, etc., under departmental scope of service;

  • Notifies appropriate staff (e.g., nurse, clinician, technician, etc.) upon arrival and departure with patient;

  • Disinfects transport equipment before and after use;

  • Reports equipment in need of repairs;

  • Keeps accurate transport records, as required;

  • Participates in the orientation of other staff, as assigned;

  • May be assigned as a Disaster Service Worker, as required;

  • Performs related duties as required.

Employment Standards

Sufficient education, training, and experience to demonstrate the possession and direct application of the following knowledge and abilities:


Training and Experience Note:
The required knowledge and abilities are attained through training and experience equivalent to high school graduation.

and

One (1) year of hospital transport work experience

OR

Possession of an active Certified Nursing Assistant or Emergency Medical Technician certificate.

Knowledge of:

  • Customer service principles and interpersonal skills;

  • Basic understanding of proper body mechanics;

  • Basic transportation equipment relating to patient care;

  • Basic communication skills;

  • Recordkeeping practices.

Ability to:

  • Adhere to standards, policies, and procedures of the hospital and follow safety guidelines for self, patient, visitors, and other employees, including Federal, State, TJC (The Joint Commission), OSHA, and CDC, and Universal Precautions and hazardous materials guidelines;

  • Learn infection control practices and perform the approved methods of cleaning and caring for equipment;

  • Learn proper body mechanics when lifting and transporting patients;

  • Understand and follow written and oral instructions;

  • Communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing;

  • Utilize self-dispatching system, when required;

  • Maintain simple records;

  • Promote positive and effective customer relations with patients and their family members, visitors, and staff;

  • Understand and apply basic concepts of patient confidentiality, privacy, security, and the appropriate release of patient information;

  • Problem-solve and recognize problems requiring referral to others;

  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Physical Requirements

  • Stand and walk for long periods of time and exercise a moderate amount of physical exertion, stamina, and manual dexterity in the handling of patients and equipment;

  • Assist, support, lift, and transfer patients and/or heavy objects in a safe manner.
